I hate coffee.

Exchange news: kind of. See, my stepdad is the CEO of a networking company and my mom is the vice president. Between them, they know pretty much everyone. Honestly. We can't go anywhere without them stopping to talk to someone they know. So, in the car today, I gave my mom the name of the president of my local Rotary club, just on the off chance that maybe she knew him. Yep. Apparently her and my stepdad are on a first name basis with him. Pretty crazy. But at the same time, really reassuring because I think, wow, this guy can put up with my crazy parents, I shouldn't have a problem. Haha. Except it's true.

Other fun things that happened today: spilled coffee all over my arm and got a lovely burn, found out that I'm pretty much dead as far as my schedule goes next year.

In a little more detail, I was with my mom and some family friends, and we stopped at Panera Bread (it's this place kind of like Starbucks if you don't have them near you). I went inside to help with the coffee, even though I don't drink coffee. So I didn't really know to make sure that oh hey, the top should be on securely. And we were walking out to the car and it spilled ALL over my hand and wrist and down my arm. Oh my god. So much pain. But my mom felt bad and got me ice cream so it was okay. It still kind of hurts, but it's not really red anymore.

Also, I found out just how screwed I am for next year. Technically, I don't get my schedule until Tuesday because all the guidance counselors aren't in until them, but let me tell you, if they tell me I'm in AP Bio, I am going to die. I am just going to say, "NO I DON'T WANT IT SWITCH ME OUT." Because there's this massive summer assignment for it, which does not make me hopeful as far as the workload for the actual school year will go. And with college applications+exchange application+online classes+an already completely insane schedule, just no. It will not work.

By the way, stalk me on tumblr too: http://vespertinedragonflies.tumblr.com/

The college search sucks (but Avatar doesn't.)

Exchange news: zero. About a week-ish ago, I got an email from the president of my local Rotary club asking if I had been contacted by someone else and I said no and I haven't heard anything since. I'm wondering if I should email him again but 1: I don't know what I would say and 2: there haven't been any updates on the ESSEX website.

However, today was a pretty good day. Two of my friends and I were all obsessed with "Avatar: The Last Airbender" when it was on Nickolodeon, so naturally, we were all thrilled when we heard there would be a movie based on it. We were NOT so thrilled when said movie got absolutely terrible reviews from everyone. We decided to go see it anyway. $20 per person later ($8 tickets because we went at noon plus ~$25 worth of food altogether), we were in the theater with a whole 3 other people. And you know what? The movie was awesome. Honestly. I thought it was going to be really stupid, but it was AMAZING. I loved it. I really, really hope that they do the two sequels or I am going to feel really jipped. But everyone should go see it. Because it was wonderful. You might not really understand it if you haven't seen the show, but it was really good. I decided that if/when I go on exchange, I really would like to bring all 3 seasons of Avatar with me to watch.

I spent the rest of the day finishing up the first semester of my German class. Not counting my oral portfolio, which has not been graded, and not counting my final, which I have not taken yet, my average for the class is a 96. My oral portfolio is 20% of my final grade and my final is 20%. I'm pretty confident that my final grade will be awesome. After, I started my sign language class, which is so much harder than you would imagine.

Then, about an hour ago, my mom knocked on my door saying I had mail. Mom, it's 11:30. It would have killed you to give me my mail when it came, oh, 8 hours ago? Of course, it's stupid college junk mail. But it happened to be from Brown (I sent my SAT scores to them). You have to understand, my mother decided that I absolutely HAD to go to Brown when I was about 3. So this started a huge discussion between my mom and my stepdad about my inevitable enrollment at Brown. Hey guys, I hate to break it to you, but I don't want to go to Brown. Further, Brown would not accept me to their school if the fate of the universe depended on it. Look, I'm not saying I'm not smart. I get straight A-s (My only A was in Fashion Design. I made a skirt with dragons on it.), I got a 2100 on my SATs, I'm in the top 15ish% of my class, etc. But I'm not exceptional. I don't play a varsity sport and seven instruments and am the president of a thousand clubs and spend my weekends reading to needy children while simultaneously finding a cure for cancer. My hobbies include playing with play-doh, writing bad poetry, hula hooping and learning random phrases in obscure languages. This is, unfortunately, not Ivy League material. Otherwise, the Ivies would have a reputation as a really cool, fun, eccentric place. Not a giant contest to see who has a stick wedged the farthest up their ass.

I did, however, find great enjoyment in reading the brochure they sent me aloud in the most condescending, pretentious-sounding voice possible.

Why hello there.

My name is Rita, which you almost definitely know, considering you probably found your way here by stalking me on some website (it's okay, I don't mind.).

So anyway, yeah, I finally gave in and made a blog. Blogging is to 2010 what cocaine was to 1985--sure, it's self-indulgent, and sure, I'm killing brain cells, but everyone else is doing it. I've wanted to make a blog for a while, actually, because feigning self-importance is one of the things I do best.

The point of this blog is kind of to chronicle my applying for a foreign exchange program and (hopefully) my subsequent foreign exchange. And I guess other things in my life, but you better hope I focus mostly on exchange, because my everyday life is unbearably boring and I spend my days playing solitaire, (kind of) learning German and checking my email obsessively for anything Rotary/college related.

A little bit about myself, I guess. I'm Rita and I'm applying to do a foreign exchange with Rotary for the 2011-2012 school year. The process is kind of insanely complicated, and involves me trying to sound really sophisticated and mature in emails to people I've never met and overall, it's just an extremely awkward, nerve-wracking process. I'm hoping to go to Iceland (my dream, and I WILL get there some day, somehow) or Norway. But lately, as I've been thinking about it, I'd really be happy anywhere. I just want to go somewhere. I've wanted to do exchange since the end of 8th grade, but then, it was kind of a "Wow, that would be really cool but it probably will never happen." kind of thing. Once I looked into it more, I was determined to make it happen somehow, and I'm still working really hard to make sure it does.

There's really not much else for me to say right now. So. Um. The end?
